HARARE – AS Zimbabwe celebrates International Women’s Day 2026, it is time to acknowledge the titans of business and economics who have paved the way for future generations.
Women like Divine Ndlukula, Tsitsi Masiyiwa, Indi Kubi, and Rudo Boka are shining examples of entrepreneurial success, while professionals such as Grace Muradzikwa, Gloria Magorimbo, and Eve Gadzikwa are breaking glass ceilings in the commercial marketplace.
Despite progress, women in Zimbabwe face numerous challenges. Financial illiteracy hinders their ability to access capital and make informed investment decisions. Gender-based violence creates a culture of fear that limits women’s participation in the workforce and entrepreneurship.
Historical gender imbalances perpetuate inequality, making it difficult for women to reach leadership positions. In addition, the violation of sexual and reproductive health rights restricts women’s autonomy and economic freedom. Climate change also disproportionately affects women, worsening poverty and limiting economic opportunities.
There are, however, many success stories that inspire hope. Divine Ndlukula is the founder of Securico and Zvikomberero Farms, a leading agricultural enterprise. Tsitsi Masiyiwa is the wife of the founder of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, a pioneer in mobile technology, and serves as patron of the Higher Life Foundation. Rudo Boka is the CEO of Boka Group, a diversified business conglomerate. Gloria Zaravanhu is the CEO of Old Mutual Insurance Company, while Eve Gadzikwa is the former CEO of the Standards Association of Zimbabwe.
These titans of business and economics can make a significant impact by mentoring young women entrepreneurs and professionals. They can also provide philanthropic support for economic education and training programmes, invest in venture capital or angel investment projects for promising female entrepreneurs, and advocate for policies that promote women’s economic empowerment.
Men must participate in empowering women and the girl child, recognising that inclusivity and equality are essential for Zimbabwe’s economic growth and development. By celebrating and supporting women in business and economics, Zimbabwe can achieve an upper-middle-income economy, stability, and a conducive investment environment. Let us honour the gallant heroines who have made a difference and work together to empower future generations.
