…as Zimbabweans Look Ahead with Steadfast Optimism

By Newton Mambande

HARARE – AS Zimbabweans prepare to celebrate Christmas, the nation faces an economic landscape filled with both hope and uncertainty. Despite some encouraging signs of growth, significant challenges persist, casting a shadow over the festive season.

According to the World Bank, Zimbabwe’s economy is projected to grow by 6% in 2025, driven by expansions in agriculture, industry, and services. This positive outlook provides a glimmer of optimism as families gather for the holidays.

However, this growth is threatened by persistent inflation, which stood at 92.5% as of June 2025, and ongoing volatility in the exchange rate. While the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency has shown some recent stability, concerns about its long-term viability remain a key worry for businesses and households alike.

Key Economic Indicators

  • GDP Growth: 6% projected for 2025, led by agriculture and mining.
  • Inflation Rate: 92.5% as of June 2025.
  • Exchange Rate: ZiG 26.7 per USD.
  • Unemployment: 21.8% as of Q3 2024.

Challenges on the Horizon

Several pressing issues could dampen economic progress in the coming year:

  • The ongoing impact of climate change and drought on agricultural output.
  • Persistent energy shortages and aging infrastructure.
  • Limited access to finance coupled with high interest rates.
  • Continued dependence on volatile external financial inflows.

A Season of Resilience and Hope

Despite these hurdles, the spirit of resilience shines brightly among Zimbabweans. Government initiatives to diversify the economy, improve infrastructure, and attract foreign investment are steps in the right direction. As families come together this Christmas, there is a shared hope for renewed stability and prosperity in the new year.

May this season bring peace, joy, and a renewed sense of possibility to all. Merry Christmas, Zimbabwe!
