HARARE – Platinum production in Zimbabwe rose 6% to 258 000 ounces in the first six months of 2024 from 242 000 ounces in the comparable period last year, the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC) latest report shows.
Conversely, in the second quarter of 2024, the southern African nation’s platinum output declined by 1% to 125 000 ounces from 126 000 ounces in Q2 2023.
“Zimbabwe’s output remained stable year-on-year at 125 000 ounces, as a decline at Zimplats was offset by growth at Unki. Output from Zimbabwe is forecast to remain stable this year,” WPIC stated.
The country’s full year production is projected to reach 504 000 ounces, reflecting a 1% decline from 507 000 ounces recorded in 2023.
The southern African country has the world’s second-largest platinum group metals resource, after South Africa, on the Great Dyke. It has three platinum-producing mines: Zimplats, Mimosa and Unki.
