HARARE – AS ZIMBABWE marks 46 years of independence, it is time to revitalise the economy through strategic infrastructure development. However, decades of neglect have left the country’s infrastructure in disarray. Power outages, crumbling roads, and poor communication networks hinder economic growth and access to basic services.
The State of Decay
Zimbabwe’s infrastructure has been declining since the late 1990s, with inadequate public spending on maintenance. The power sector is crippled, roads are congested, and water shortages are common. This has resulted in significant economic losses, depressing enterprise productivity by up to 40% – a common issue across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Glimmer of Hope
The government has initiated projects like the Trabablas Interchange and Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERRP2). Efforts to increase rural electrification to 75% by 2030 are underway, including the Presidential Rural Solar Power Scheme.
Solar Power: A Key to Energy Security
Establishing solar farms can electrify public infrastructure like hospitals and schools. Zimbabwe’s solar energy potential is vast, presenting opportunities for Independent Power Producers to contribute to the national grid.
Communication Technology: A Growth Catalyst
Zimbabwe’s communication sector shows promise, with three mobile operators. However, internet costs are high, and infrastructure development is needed.
The Elephant in the Room: Corruption
Corruption and misgovernance hinder infrastructure development. The government must prioritise transparency and accountability.
The Way Forward
To achieve sustainable growth, Zimbabwe should:
- Increase investment in infrastructure (US$2.6 billion annually to 2030)
- Improve efficiency in public spending
- Encourage private sector participation through PPPs
- Address corruption and misgovernance
By prioritising infrastructure development, Zimbabwe can unlock its economic potential.
